Msafiri M. Jackson is a Professor of Environmental Engineering and the current Deputy Vice Chancellor (Planning, Finance, and Administration) of Mwalimu Julius K. Nyerere University of Agriculture and Technology whose headquarter is at Butiama, Mara Region. Prior to his appointment to his current position, Prof. Jackson served as Principal of the College of Natural and Mathematical Sciences of the University of Dodoma. Before that, Msafiri Jackson worked as a Director of Quality Assurance Bureau at Ardhi University. Over the years, Prof. Jackson has occupied various administrative posts including being a Head of Academic Department, Faculty Dean, Ag. College Registrar and Deputy Principal (Academics Affairs) at the former University College of Lands and Architectural Studies – UCLAS (The current Ardhi University). Earlier on, in his carrier, Msafiri also worked with Tanzania Industrial Research and Development Organization (TIRDO) as a Research and Development Engineer and Mlingano Agricultural Training Institute as Trainee Instructor.  Msafiri Jackson holds PhD. in Environmental Engineering from Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago, U.S.A (1997); MSc (Chemical Engineering – Integrated Design of Chemical Plant), University of Leeds, U.K.(1990); and BSc (Process Engineering), University of Dar es Salaam, (1986).


His main research interests are in the areas of air pollution control and equipment design (absorbers, adsobers, strippers, ESP, incinerators, venture scrubbers, fabric filters, cyclones, condensers, heat exchangers, fans, duct systems, etc);  emissions  estimations and pollutants dispersion modeling; air pollution monitoring and management; water pollution monitoring and management; water quality management; industrial waste management; transport and fate of chemicals in the environment; hazardous waste management; sustainable energy provision and conservation; climate change; process plant equipment design;  process control and optimization; process development and products formulation. He has offered consultancy services in various areas including environmental impact assessment and environmental audit; sustainable energy generation and utilization; environmental quality baseline surveys in mining industry; waste management; wastewater treatment; risk assessment and management; process plant equipment design; process control and optimization; and process development and products formulation. Prof. Jackson has published widely in international and local journals.  He has also published many articles in conference proceedings.  Msafiri Jackson teaches and supervise researches for both undergraduates and postgraduates students. 


Prof. Jackson was a Contributing Author of Global Environmental Outlook Assessment (under UN Environment Programme), a report presented in the RIO+20 Conference in June 2012;  A chairperson of a Technical Committee of Air Quality Monitoring project in Dar-es-Salaam City; A Team Leader of Atmospheric Pollution Dispersion and Deposition Modeling in the Air Pollution Network in Africa; A member of Atmospheric Brown Clouds (ABC) Science Committee for Africa (A sub-committee of International ABC Science Team); and a Tanzania Coordinator of Transport and Environment - Science and Technology (TEST) Program (involving six African universities and European partners). He is also a member of Noise and Vibration Standards Technical Committee and Air Quality Technical Committee, both of Tanzania Bureau of Standards.


Prof. Msafiri Jackson is a: Registered Professional Engineer (PE) in Tanzania; Registered Environmental Expert (T); Registered Environment Auditor in Tanzania; Elected Fellow of the Tanzania Academy of Sciences, Member of American Institution of Chemical Engineers (MAIChE); and Member of Institution of Engineers, Tanzania (MIET).
